The areas of diagnosis and treatment of venous thromboembolism and its sequelae continue to evolve. This session will focus on practical aspects of the diagnosis of suspected deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, the use of risk stratification to guide management of pulmonary embolism, and the prevention and management of the post-thrombotic syndrome, with an emphasis on new information or concepts in these areas.
Dr. Clive Kearon will discuss: (i) the goals of diagnostic testing; (ii) the level of certainty (or "post-test probability") that is required to "rule-out" and "rule-in" VTE; (iii) optimal selection of diagnostic tests; and (iv) combinations of diagnostic test results that confirm or exclude DVT and PE.
Dr. Cecilia Becattini will discuss: (i) the rationale for risk stratification of patients with acute PE; (ii) the methods for risk stratification; (iii) available evidences for risk stratification-driven management of PE.
Dr. Susan Kahn will provide an update on risk determinants of the post-thrombotic syndrome after DVT and discuss approaches to preventing and treating the post-thrombotic syndrome. She will summarize the available evidence, discuss optimal management strategies and highlight areas for future study.
